BEOLAB 8000 (1992) I.D. MagazineThe ballerina
"They are a revolt against indifference and the heavy wooden boxes grumbling in the corners of people's homes, dictating where the furniture should be placed," David Lewis said of the 90's generation of Bang & Olufsen's Active Loudspeakers.
One day inspiration had come to him on a Saturday morning. There was a market in front of the local church with a booth selling loose organ pipes. They were lying on a table, taken out of their natural context of the organ and the church, and could now - separately and as a symbol of music, be used for quite a different purpose. The BeoLab 8000, for Lewis always reminiscent of a ballerina balancing on her tip-toe, and compared by American I.D. Magazine to the sculptural work of Constantin Brancusi, was thought as a sound column. Designed to stand up among the furniture and mingle with it.
This is why polished aluminium was used: It assumes the colours of the surroundings in stead of dominating them.
