BEOVISION AVANT (1995)

Upright operated tv theatre It takes some time, from the push of a button until there is a picture on the television. You wait a while! This experience reminded David Lewis of a theater before the curtain is raised!

Hence, the 16:9 format televisions from Bang & Olufsen have an electronic curtain to enhance this feeling of the spectacular. When the sound is ready and the picture clear, the play can begin!

When commencing work on the BeoVision Avant, David Lewis felt that it was time to change the usual operation of the integrated VCR where the user had to bow to load and unload the videocassette - and kneel to read the display and push buttons. He wanted the videocassette loading on top. Every possibility to realize this idea was carefully examined, but the tape mechanisms that could be placed at the top of Avant did not have the necessary quality and life time.

Finally, Lewis had to bow to a solution, where the video-cassette had to be loaded below the picture!

But true to the original idea, he developed an operation panel to be placed at the top of Avant. Standing upright in front of the system and watching the picture, the user is able, in one natural movement, to place her hand lightly at the top of Avant - feel her way to the right button - and operate the essential functions. An altogether more dignified solution.
